Aware of its growing electricity demand and its commitment to adopt green energy Telangana goes aggressive in making a refined Clean & Green Energy Policy. The State will announce the Policy soon.

At a stakeholders convention here on Friday to discuss the proposed Telangana Clean & Green Energy Policy – 2024 (TGREEN), the State Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Batti Vikramarka, who also holds the energy portfolio, said that the “State has emerged as a hub for technology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and agriculture, showcasing the need for a resilient and sustainable energy sector.”

According to the Minister, the proposed TGREEN Policy 2024 has the following objectives: Provide reliable and affordable green power; ensure the self-sufficiency and sustainability of Telangana Power Utilities; promote the development of renewable energy projects in the State; Boost private investments and increase job potential.

Talking about the incentives, he said that the policy proposes to offer tax reimbursement and exemption, Capital Subsidies, Ease of Approval: A single-window clearance mechanism has been proposed; support for Energy Storage, Green Hydrogen Initiatives, Incentives for Distributed Generation, and Local Industry Growth.

The proposed policy does not miss the need to modernise the grid infrastructure to integrate the growing renewable energy capacity seamlessly and meet the demand.

Telangana is committed to strengthening its energy network by augmenting transmission/distribution capacity to accommodate new projects, he said.

The Minister said consultation is vital to shaping the renewable energy policy. He said the draft policy is a living document designed to evolve with your input to address the dynamic needs of the State in renewable energy.

He told the stakeholders that the consultations were to refine the shared vision of a sustainable and renewable energy future for the State. The focus is on reliable and affordable access to clean energy. He added that the development work that the State has undertaken is projected to drive an exponential rise in peak electricity demand, from 15,623 MW in FY24 to 24,215 MW by FY30 and 31,809 MW by FY35.

“It is essential that this demand that is met with clean, reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions,” the Minister added.

Telangana is endowed with immense potential for renewable energy generation. It receives over 300 days of sunshine annually, which generates significant solar power. It also stands as one of India’s top 8 States for wind power, with a potential of 54,717 MW.

The State already has pumped storage projects at Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar. “There is additional potential for pumped storage plants which can offer a significant opportunity to enhance energy storage capacity, balance renewable energy integration, and ensure grid stability,” he added.

The Minister said there are immense opportunities to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the State.

Currently, Telangana’s renewable energy capacity stands at 11,399 MW, which includes:

  • 7,889 MW of solar energy (excluding distributed renewable energy)
  • 771 MW of distributed renewable energy
  • 221 MW from other RE (which includes 128 MW from wind energy)
  • 2,518 MW of hydro energy.
  • 872 EV charging stations.

The State has set an ambitious target of adding 20,000 MW of renewable energy and Storage Capacity by 2030. Telangana aims to achieve an additional 20,000 MW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2030.

To achieve this, he said the State is accelerating the development of standalone solar and wind energy installations and promoting Innovative solutions such as floating solar, RE-RTC, and FDRE (Renewable Energy Round-the-Clock, and Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy technology).

Later addressing a press conference the Minister when talking about overall power sector said, to strengthen the States position in the Power sector, he is open to having partnerships with other States for energy resources.
