West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, while claiming that “at least 15 pilgrims” succumbed in the early morning stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, offered her condolences to the bereaved families.
Banerjee while taking to her X handle stated that her experiences of organising the annual Gangasagar Mela in Bengal warrant “maximal planning and care” to handle huge assemblies such as the Kumbh.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh, which has claimed at least 15 innocent lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved pilgrim families. My learning from our Gangasagar Mela is that planning and care must be maximal in matters relating to pilgrims’ lives in vast assemblies of people. Prayers for the departed souls,” she wrote.

Bodies, clothes and bags lay scattered on the ground after a deadly stampede at the world’s largest gathering of humanity, the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India, on one of the most auspicious days in Hinduism.
Witnesses described a mass of people rushing to take a pre-dawn dip at the confluence of the three sacred rivers - the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mythical, invisible Saraswati, at Prayagraj, which Hindus believe absolves them of all sins and frees them from the circle of life and death.

DIG Mahakumbh, Vaibhav Krishna has ordered horse-mounted police personnel to move devotees to vacate the Triveni Sangam ghat.

Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri on Wednesday said that due to the stampede-like situation at Maha Kumbh, the seers have called off their Mauni Amavasya’s Amrit Snan.
A stampede-like situation broke out at Sangam earlier on Wednesday at the Sangam, where several people, including women and children, suffered injuries.
“You would’ve seen what happened in the morning, and that’s why we have decided to... All of our saints and seers were ready for the ‘snan’ when we were informed about this incident. That’s why we have decided to call off our ‘snan’ on ‘Mauni Amavasya’,” Mahant Ravindra Puri told PTI Videos.
As per tradition of the Kumbh Mela, Akharas belonging to the three sects ‘Sanyasi, Bairagi, and Udaseen’ take the holy dip in a set sequence following a majestic, awe-inspiring procession to the Sangam Ghat. Read more

Multiple casualties were feared after a “stampede-like” situation broke out at the Sangam on Wednesday amid the ongoing Maha Kumbh, as a large number of pilgrims turned up for a holy bath on Mauni Amavasya, officials said.
Officer on Special Duty for the Mela Akanksha Rana said, “Some people have got injured and have been hospitalised after a barrier broke at the Sangam. We are yet to have the exact count of those injured”.
The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya is the most significant ritual of the Maha Kumbh and is expected to draw around 10 crore pilgrims.

Mahakumbh 2025 live updates: Uttar Pradesh government issues fire advisory for Maha Kumbh, emphasises importance of early alerts
The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday released an advisory regarding fire safety to all the camps at the Maha Kumbh Mela, being held at Prayagraj.
The advisory asked people to immediately inform the Mela control and local police and fire stations on 112, 1920, 1090, or the numbers specified by ICCC in case of a fire or emergency incident.
In case of a fire, it is asked to create noise to alert and notify the nearby tents to be cautious.
“During an emergency, remain calm and work with a cool mind, using the nearest fire-fighting equipment from a safe distance, without putting yourself in danger, to attempt extinguishing the fire,” the advisory further reads.
Devotees need to be aware of the nearest exit routes and use them in case of a fire.“Properly identify your fire-fighting equipment so it can be used correctly to extinguish the fire.
Keep an adequate supply of water and sand near the tent to use in case of fire to extinguish it,” it further reads.
Emphasising on quick evacuation of children, officials ask to cut down the ropes or strings of the tent to prevent the spread of the fire.
“Make every effort to extinguish the fire using available water, sand, or any fire-fighting equipment as soon as possible,” it added. - ANI

Krishna Kumar Khemka, trustee of Geeta Press Gorakhpur, spoke about the devastating fire that broke out at its camp in the Maha Kumbh Mela, destroying 180 cottages.
Khemka explained, “About 180 cottages were built. And we had built them very carefully. Everyone had been forbidden to do any kind of fireworks. A circulating area was announced on the west side, where we have laid the boundary, where people would bathe in the Ganges.”He further added, “I don’t know to whom the administration gave it. The Uttar Pradesh government has made special arrangements for entertaining and enriching the experience of devotees attending Mahakumbh 2025.
According to an official release, cultural programs are being organised across various pandals in the fair area, including the prominent Ganga Pandal located in Sector 1.
As part of these events, renowned poet Kumar Vishwas will narrate his celebrated Ram Katha, “Apne-Apne Ram,” beginning Monday. The sessions will take place at the Ganga Pandal daily from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Mahakumbh 2025 live updates: Initiation process of over 100 Naga Sanyasinis begins at Maha Kumbh
With the Maha Kumbh underway in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, the initiation process for over hundred women to become ‘Naga Sanyasini’ of Juna Akhada began on Sunday.
The registration process for the initiation is currently underway, and in the first phase, 102 women were given the ‘Naga Diksha’, said Divya Giri, a saint at the Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhada.
They were granted the title of ‘Avdhutani’, after 12 years of serving under their guru, she said.
Dressed in a 2.75-metre unstitched clothes, the Avdhutani group arrived at the banks of the Ganga and their head was shaved as per tradition.
After taking a holy dip in the Ganga, they were given a water pot (Kamandal), Ganga ‘jal’, and a staff.
The final part of the initiation process will be performed by the Juna Akhada’s Acharya Mahamandaleshwar, Swami Avadheshanand Giri. - PTI

The accusation by the opposition parties about these things is very superficial and is a proof of their hostile politics,” Srivastava told ANI.Further, the BJP minister applauded CM Yogi Adityanath for taking immediate action of the fire.“The Chief Minister reviewed the arrangements of Maha Kumbh and has gone place to place to review. As soon as he receive information about the fire he reached the location. The government will take action on this.. there have been no damages as of now,” he added.The fire was extinguished within a period of 20 minutes and no casualties were reported, as per Uttar Pradesh Minister AK Sharma.Speaking to ANI, Sharma said “The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. Mahakumbh 2025 live updates: ODOP products’ exhibition at Mahakumbh
Items such as carpets, glass toys from Firozabad, and wooden toys from Varanasi are being showcased under the Centre’s ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative at the Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, an official statement said on Sunday.
It also said that ecommerce firm Flipkart has set up a stall at the Mahakumbh, providing entrepreneurs with an opportunity to sell their products on their platform for free.
Sharad Tandon, Joint Commissioner of Industries for the Prayagraj Division, stated that in 2019, the Kumbh Mela generated a business worth Rs 4.30 crore, and this time the business is expected to reach up to Rs 35 crore.
The initiative is aimed promoting the handicrafts and cottage industries of the country.
“Items such as carpets, zari-zardosi, glass toys from Firozabad, wooden toys from Varanasi, and other handicraft products are becoming major attractions for devotees,” it said.

A delegation from Italy met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after taking a holy dip at the Sangam in the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh on Sunday and expressed admiration for Indian culture and traditions, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement.
Led by Mahi Guru, the founder and trainer at a meditation and yoga centre in Italy, the group included several women.
The group members shared their spiritual experiences at the Maha Kumbh, which they described as a live demonstration of India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
During the meeting at Adityanath’s official residence, the delegation members recited ‘chaupai (verse)‘ from the Ramayana, Shiva Tandav, and sang ‘bhajans’.
They shared with the chief minister how participating in the Naga sadhus’ rituals, ‘bhajan-kirtan’ and other religious practices impacted their understanding of Indian traditions.
The women members said their experiences at the Maha Kumbh had left them deeply impressed by the depth of Indian culture and spirituality.
They also appreciated the warmth and the hospitality they experienced during the visit and noted how the event had reinforced the importance of spirituality and unity in diversity.
Adityanath expressed his gratitude to the delegation for its visit.

A massive fire broke out in the Maha Kumbh Mela area on Sunday due to a cylinder blast, police said, but there was no immediate news of any casualty.

A sprawling temporary city spread over 10,000 acres, more than a crore pilgrims and seers living at a time and about 20 lakh visitors daily -- the Integrated Control Command Centre here is keeping a hawk’s eye to ensure smooth crowd management through continuous monitoring.
More than 400 people each in four Integrated Control Command Centres (ICCC) keep a continuous watch on big screens displaying live footage and data from hotspots to alert the personnel on crowd density and pilgrim flow.
The source of the visuals -- more than 3,000 cameras, underwater drones and a battery of over 60,000 personnel on the ground.
The mega-religious event, organised every 12 years, is being held in Prayagraj from January 13 and will continue for 45 days. More than seven crore pilgrims have so far taken a holy dip at the Sangam -- the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), in partnership with the Adani Group, is providing meals to nearly one lakh people daily at the ongoing Maha Kumbh, a spiritual organisation’s official said.
At a camp on Harshvardhan Marg here, ISKCON’s one kitchen prepares food for 30,000 - 35,000 people in one session, and more than one lakh people are served food in three sessions a day, its Director (CSR) Madhukant Das told PTI.
ISKCON’s food -- which includes dal, chole or rajma, vegetables and roti and rice, and halwa or boondi laddu in sweets-- is completely balanced. These meals are prepared on a clay stove over a fire of wood and cow dung cakes, which makes them taste amazing, he added. - PTI

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday started a special bus service from Jammu to Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj to enable devotees from the region to participate in the Maha Kumbh, an official said.
Transport Minister Satish Sharma flagged off the special end-to-end bus service, an official spokesperson said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Saturday and said it is “a spiritual and cultural mega festival of Indianness,” a statement from the Uttar Pradesh government read.
Singh, accompanied by BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi, was welcomed at Bamrauli Airport by Uttar Pradesh Minister Nand Gopal Gupta.

As the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj is now in its full splendour, devotees from India and abroad are immersed in partaking in an experience that has unique and lasting impact. Foreign devotees have called attending the Maha Kumbh Mela an “amazing and fantastic experience” and stressed that the “devotion and tradition in this land is very strong.”Foreign devotees also visited the sacred akhadas of Naga Sadhus to seek their blessings. Speaking to ANI, Esther, who travelled from Mexico to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela, said, “I feel joyous. I think I have been connected to the enjoyment and the great vibes that people have coming here. Also taking water from the Ganga River and it’s amazing. Maha Kumbh: UP’s handicraft industry to witness Rs 35 crore trade
The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj is proving to be a significant platform for artisans of Uttar Pradesh. Officials estimate a turnover of about Rs 35 crore for the handicraft industry during the 45-day fair.
After taking a dip in the Sangam, people are also visiting the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) exhibition set up across 6,000 square metres area.
The exhibition showcases an array of exquisite handicrafts, including carpets of Kushinagar, zari-zardozi work, Firozabad’s glass toys and Varanasi’s wooden toys, among other things.

‘One Plate, One Bag’ campaign launched for plastic-free Maha Kumbh
Cloth bags, steel plates and steel glasses are being distributed at the Maha Kumbh to ensure that the world’s largest religious congregation is plastic-free, an RSS functionary said.
The “One Plate, One Bag” campaign was launched in Sector 18 on the Old GT Road by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sah-Sarkaryavah Krishna Gopal to replace plastic bags and disposable items, Prant Prachar Pramukh of the organisation, Murar Tripathi, said on Wednesday.
Addressing the pilgrims, Gopal said collective efforts were needed to create a plastic-free society and asserted that everyone should adopt the habit of using cloth bags.
“Cloth bags and carry bags are being distributed to visitors, with around 70,000 such bags already handed out from six centres. Additionally, he shared that 2 million steel plates and steel glasses have been collected from across the country,” Tripathi said.

Mahakumbh 2025 live news & updates: AI-powered lost and found centre established for devotees
In view of the massive influx of pilgrims attending Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, the administration has established an AI-based computerized lost and found centre.Sharing details about the centre, Additional Mela Adhikari Vivek Chaturvedi told ANI, “An AI-based lost and found centre has been set up. Arrangements are made there for accommodation, clothes and food for the people who are lost... There has not been a single case in which we have not been able to reunite children or lost people with their relatives. We have received a good response from the computerised lost and found centre... If there is a case in which we have not been able to reunite a person with his relatives, then the administration takes them to their home at its own expense.”On Wednesday, a 21-member delegation from 10 countries arrived at Arail Tent City in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. The delegation is scheduled to take a holy dip at Triveni Sangam.The delegation, invited by the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, will take a sacred dip at Triveni Sangam on Thursday.The visiting group includes representatives from Fiji, Finland, Guyana, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This showcases the global interest in this spiritual event, which is a symbol of India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

Thousands of devotees took a holy dip at Triveni Sangam, a sacred confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and ‘mystical’ Saraswati, here on Thursday morning, the fourth day of the 45-day-long Maha Kumbh.Over 6 crore devotees have participated in the world’s biggest religious congregation; over 3.5 crore on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on January 14.Meanwhile, given the massive influx of pilgrims, the Prayagraj administration has established an AI-based computerized lost and found centre.Sharing details about the centre, Additional Mela Adhikari Vivek Chaturvedi told ANI, “An AI-based lost and found centre has been set up. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it the ‘mahayagya of unity’ and the common devotees see it as a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience but for the Uttar Pradesh government, the 45-day-long Mahakumbh starting January 13, which is expected to host 450 million devotees is a rare opportunity to showcase the State at a global level.

From eye-catching installations to branded changing rooms, brands will be wooing devotees in unique ways. “We are seeing 3 to 4X times more brands than in the regular Kumbh,” says Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Vritti Mindwave Media that has got the rights for the LED display ad spaces at the mela. Over 250 brands have booked space already, he says. BFSI and fFintech brands have shown surprising interest, he says.
