The reconciliation meeting between Samsung India and Samsung Thozhilalargal Sangam in the presence of the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Sriperumbudur, on Thursday remained inconclusive. There will be another meeting to be held in February, union sources said.

The union representative who was in the meeting told businessline that two months ago the union issued a letter to the company seeking a reply on various issues. However, the company did not reply. The labour department official during the meeting today took cognisance of this and told the company to reply within two weeks.

Samsung India Thozhilalargal Sangam

Forming and registering a trade union under the banner of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has been the bone of contention between the management of Samsung India’s Chennai plant and 1,100 striking workers of the company, which manufactures consumer durables like washing machine and air conditioners. This has been settled with the Tamil Nadu labour department on Monday registering Samsung India Thozhilalargal Sangam.

After the month-long strike, In October, Samsung signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the workmen committee of its Chennai factory. Both parties agreed to collaborate to make the Chennai factory a great place to work.

However, the union representative claimed that the company is yet to sort out certain issues. It had also issued chargesheets to about 50 employees, resorted to department interchange of employees and offered ₹3 lakh one time payment as part of the agreement to only those who accepted the committee. “There were discrimination against some employees,” he said.

The company did not respond to queries seeking comment.
