In its efforts to boost the consumption of fruits and vegetables, the Government will launch a programme in partnership with State governments.
Presenting the Union Budget for 2025-26 on Saturday, Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister, said: “With rising income levels, the consumption of vegetables, fruits and shree-anna is increasing significantly. A comprehensive programme to promote production, efficient supplies, processing, and remunerative prices for farmers will be launched in partnership with states.”
She also said that appropriate institutional mechanisms for implementation and participation of farmer producer organizations and cooperatives will be set up.
Signs of healthier society
Stating that Indians are increasingly becoming aware of their nutritional needs, she said it is a sign of a society becoming healthier.
The budget proposals also mentioned about the Government’s intention to facilitate upgradation of infrastructure and warehousing for air cargo, including high-value perishable horticulture produce. Cargo screening and customs protocols will be streamlined and made user-friendly, the Minister said.
It is to be noted here that the Economic Survey 2024-25 had termed horticulture sector as a fast-growing industry. The Survey said India’s horticulture sector is more productive and profitable than traditional agriculture, emerging as a fast-growing industry.
